City Place
CityPlace is a master-planned community that spans 45 acres of prime downtown real estate and includes 5.4 million square feet of residential and commercial space, making it one of Toronto's densest areas. At its core is Artspace, an outdoor public art gallery featuring installations and sculptures scattered throughout the area. The centerpiece of the neighborhood is Canoe Landing Park, an 8-acre space filled with various art pieces, the most iconic being the Red Canoe by renowned Canadian artist Douglas Coupland. Positioned at the park's southern end overlooking the Gardiner Expressway, this sculpture has become a Toronto landmark.
History
CityPlace is built on the former Spadina Street Yards, which were part of the Canadian National Railway since the 1850s. By 1965, railway operations moved north of the city, and the railway lands were sold to Canada Lands Company, a federal crown corporation dedicated to repurposing and revitalizing this prime downtown real estate. The transformation began in 1975 with the construction of the CN Tower, followed by the Metro Convention Centre in 1984, and later the Rogers Centre (formerly the Sky Dome) and Scotiabank Arena (formerly the Air Canada Centre).
In 1997, with the necessary infrastructure in place, Canada Lands Company sold the former railway lands to Concord Adex Developments. Concord Adex envisioned CityPlace, a master-planned community. Before construction, the area briefly operated as a 9-hole golf course and driving range. CityPlace gained attention as a $2-billion development, built in phases over a decade. The first two condominium buildings, Apex 1 and Apex 2, were completed in 2003. Today, CityPlace includes a number of condominium buildings, townhomes, a landmark park, and an outdoor public art gallery.

CityPlace is home to the SkyBridge, Canada’s highest suspended residence. Weighing in at 450 tonnes and 40-meters long, the SkyBridge is approximately the same size as a Boeing 737 commercial jet. The SkyBridge was pre-fabricated as a modular unit and the lift had to be perfectly timed to account for weather conditions and wind speed. It took a total of 15 hours to complete.
