Playter Estates

Playter Estates is an exclusive enclave located just east of the Don Valley. This neighborhood boasts many desirable features, including beautiful homes, tons of shops and restaurants, and convenient access to Toronto’s transit system. One of the appealing aspects of living in the area is the proximity to excellent shopping on the Danforth, where you can find everything from fashion boutiques and wine shops to gourmet coffee shops and the city's best selection of Greek restaurants. The Carrot Common, located on the Danforth at Jackman Avenue, features numerous stores with a natural/health theme. Its anchor store, the Big Carrot, is a natural food market that draws shoppers from all over the city.

History

Playter Estates was named after the Playter family, who were the original landholders on both sides of the Don River near Bloor Street. Captain George Playter, the family’s patriarch, migrated to Canada from Pennsylvania in the 1790s as a United Empire Loyalist. The land where Playter Estates now stands was owned by James Playter, George's son, though it was James' elder brother John who first settled there. John's grandson, John Lea Playter, constructed the Playter’s family at 28 Playter Crescent in the mid-1870s, a picturesque brick residence, now referred to as the Playter Mansion. The surrounding land was utilized for farming until 1912, when the neighborhood became established as a residential area.
