History
Summerhill’s story began in 1842 with the construction of the ‘Summer Hill’ house by Charles Thompson. Thompson’s estate, sprawling over 200 acres from Yonge Street to Mount Pleasant Road, transformed into the Summer Hill Spring Park and Pleasure Grounds, featuring rides, games, swimming, and a dance pavilion—a popular destination for picnics and day trips. By the 1860s, Thompson’s heirs subdivided the estate, leading to rapid growth spurred by the emerging railroad in the 1880s. The establishment of the North Toronto railway station nearby fueled industrialization, attracting residents seeking employment and opportunity. By the 1920s, Summerhill had become a hub for the Canadian Pacific Railway, catalyzing its transformation into a prestigious and highly sought-after neighborhood, a reputation it continues to uphold today.
