Shared Queen Bed For Rent In Downtown Toronto
Did you think there was no way the Toronto rental market could get any worse? Well, it did. In September, someone tried to rent out a space in their queen sized bed in a downtown condo for $900/mo. No, not a room rental. A shared bed.
When Landlords and Tenants Don’t Understand The RTA
The rental market is full of unethical and flat out illegal behaviour from both landlords and tenants. All parties that are involved with the leasing process must understand their rights and responsibilities under the Residential Tenancies Act. It is as simple as following the rules and being a decent person...
Ice Condos Closet For Rent
The Ice Condos does it again with this front closet listed for rent at $980/4 weeks - but don't worry, it comes fully furnished with a cot, bookshelf, and a clock. There are many people who don’t have the choice not to rent things like this. There is a massive shortage of affordable housing in Toronto so there will always be demand for rentals like this.
The Definition of “Slumlord”
Wondering why so many people dislike landlords? This is why. This redditor is concerned about his friend's intentions to buy a 1+1 bedroom condo in Downtown Toronto and rent it to six people at $1,000 per head. While it's likely that the condo corporation will have some sort of by-law perventing this, it is still concerining that someone feels this is an appropriate living setup.
When Landlords Try to Take Advantage of Tenants
The cost of living has risen substantially over the last few years and many people are struggling to keep up, including landlords. But that doesn’t mean they have the right to try and sneakily raise rent above legal limits. We’re all human, have a conversation with your tenant or landlord if you are going through a tough time - hopefully they’ll be understanding.
Rental Scams
Rental scams are a serious problem in Toronto, and they affect both landlords and tenants. whether you’re renting your property out or finding a property to rent, make sure you are dilligent and careful to avoid being scammed. As a landlord, be sure to do your due dilligence in determining all documentation provided by a tenant is legitamate. As a tenant, if something seems too good to be true, it probably is. Never give someone a "security" deposit before seeing the rental.
Being Evicted Because Your Landlord Wants To Move In
The N12 and N13 are both end of lease forms. Which means if you are on a lease, your landlord cannot evict you because they, or a direct relative, want to move in, or because they want to renovate. As a tenant, study and learn your rights. As a landlord, know your rights and responsibilities.
Landlords Who Disregard The Rules
Landlords, stop asking for things that are in violation of the Residential Tenancies Act. Tenants, know your rights inside & out so that you do not blindly agree to something that is in violation of the RTA. For instance, a rent increase with less than 90 days notice or for the second time in a 12 month period.
Beware of Rental Scams
If you are looking for a rental and not using a real estate agent, you have to be extra cognizant of private listings. Beware of any listings that see too good to be true or any situation where the "landlord" is insistent you send a key or security deposit before you see the rental because they claim to be out of the country and can't show you the apartment.
What Happens at The End of Your Lease?
When a lease comes to an end, the tenant automatically moves to a month to month tenancy. There is no obligation for either the tenant or landlord to sign a new lease. The tenant is NOT obligated to leave at the end of a tenancy and cannot be evicted just because the lease term is over.
Rent Control 101
There is a lot of confusion around rent control in Ontario and when it applies. Any property that was first occupied for residentual purposes AFTER November 15, 2018, is not subject to the provincial rent increase guideline. Meaning the landlord can increase the rent without limitations, provided they give the tenant 90 days notice and do not increase more than once in a 12 month period.
Rent Increase Madness
There are a lot of good landlords out there, but in this case, it is not one of them. Tenants, make sure you are educated on your rights. Landlords, make sure you know your responsibilities.
